ORT Tech enters a team to compete in the First Lego League

On the 5 November a team of grade 8 and 9 learners from Linge Primary School in Gugulethu will compete with other teams from all over Cape Town in the First Lego League Robotics tournament.

There are two parts to this tournament, one is the robotics competition. This is where teams compete with robots on a table, they have to programme the robot to follow out certain instructions. The other part of the tournament is the presentation of a project. The theme of the tournament changes every year, this year the topic is about food contamination.

ORT Tech has used generous donations from sponsors to enter it’s team under the leadership of Mr France a teacher at Linge Primary School. ORT Tech staff member Sellina Nonkontwana visits the school on a weekly basis to assist the team in preparing for the competition.

On the 28 September some of the students, their teachers, Ms Nonkontwana and Debbie Staniland
went to Faircape Dairies. This was part of the research required for the project on food contamination. Ms Dolby from Faircape answered questions from the students and gave a tour of the plant.

ORT Tech last year invested in 10 Robotics kits and we hope to be in a position to sponsor more teams for the 2012 competition. FLL teachers many skills, including research, presenting, technology, mathematics, computer programming and team work. Sponsorship of the teams includes the entrance fee to the competition, purchasing the specific competition kit, transport costs and team shirts.
